Voprosy Literatury [Problems of Literature] was founded in 1957 by the A. M. Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Soviet Writers’ Union. An independent non-profit organization since the 1990s, the journal’s editorial committee enjoys a freedom of choice when it comes to selection of the material for publication. Today, Voprosy Literatury is one of Russia’s few independent philological publications.
Despite its pronounced scholarly emphasis, the journal plays in the same league as literary heavyweights like Novy Mir and Znamya. It regularly publishes numerous pieces devoted to contemporary literary process. Voprosy Literatury is a journal with a recognizable and consistent identity.
The journal proudly upholds the ideological and aesthetic traditions of Russian humanist thinkers. In the many years since its inception, it has published works by Sergey Averintsev, Mikhail Bakhtin, Galina Belaya, Sergey Bocharov, Mikhail Gasparov, Vyacheslav Ivanov, Vadim Kozhinov, Lazar Lazarev, Andrey Turkov, Viktor Shklovsky, and others.
Voprosy Literatury is on the List of Peer-Reviewed Publications, which publish the primary research findings of dissertations written in support for a Russian academic degree of Candidate of Sciences and Doctor of Sciences (group of specialties: 10.01.00 – Literary criticism).
Voprosy Literatury is registered with the NEB Scientific Electronic Library, and features in the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI), a national informational and analytical system (https://elibrary.ru/title_about.asp?id=7708).
